One of the first questions families ask after booking a photography session is, “What should we wear?”

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The goal isn’t for everyone to match perfectly. It’s to choose clothing that coordinates, feels comfortable and allows your family’s connection to remain the focus of your photographs.

As a family photographer based in Palmetto and serving Bradenton, Parrish, Sarasota and surrounding areas, I’ve seen how the right colors, fabrics and clothing choices can completely transform a gallery. This guide will help you choose family photo outfits that look beautiful while still feeling like your family.

Choose Coordinating Colors Instead of Matching Outfits

You don’t need to put everyone in identical white shirts and blue jeans. Instead, choose a color palette containing three or four complementary colors and use those colors throughout everyone’s outfits.

For example, you might choose:

• Cream, sage green, tan and soft pink
• Rust, beige, olive and brown
• Dusty blue, cream, gray and muted green
• Soft yellow, ivory, light blue and khaki

Start by choosing one person’s outfit—usually Mom’s—and build everyone else’s clothing around it. If Mom wears a floral dress containing cream, sage and dusty pink, those colors can be incorporated into the other family members’ clothing.

For a Florida beach photography session, soft neutrals, dusty blues, muted greens, blush and warm beige complement the sand, water and sunset. Flowing dresses and lightweight fabrics also photograph beautifully when they catch the coastal breeze.

For a park or wildflower session in Bradenton, Palmetto or Parrish, earthy colors such as cream, olive, rust, mustard and soft brown work well with the greenery and warm golden light.

Try to avoid neon colors because they can reflect onto your skin and create distracting color casts. Bright neon clothing may also pull attention away from your family’s expressions and connection.

Long, flowing dresses and skirts create beautiful movement during outdoor family sessions. Cardigans, textured shirts, overalls and light layers can also add depth without making your family feel overly dressed.

Because Florida is warm for much of the year, choose breathable fabrics and light layers. You want everyone—especially young children—to feel comfortable throughout the session.

Use Patterns Carefully

Patterns can look beautiful in family photographs when they are used in moderation.

Choose one family member to wear a subtle pattern, such as a soft floral dress, and dress everyone else in solid colors taken from that pattern. This creates variety while keeping the final look cohesive.

Avoid having multiple people wear large or competing patterns. Tiny, tightly spaced stripes can also create visual distortion in photographs. Large logos, brand names, cartoon characters and bold graphics tend to distract from your family and may make the images feel dated.

Dress for Comfort and Movement

Your family session will likely include walking, playing, cuddling, dancing and interacting with your children. Choose outfits that allow everyone to move naturally.

Children should be able to run, sit and play comfortably. Avoid clothing that constantly needs to be adjusted or shoes that are difficult to walk in.

Remember to remove hair ties from wrists and empty pockets before your session. Phones, keys and wallets can create noticeable outlines in clothing.

What Should Mom Wear for Family Photos?

Mom should choose something that makes her feel confident and comfortable. Long or midi dresses are popular for outdoor family photography because they create movement and photograph beautifully from different angles.

Look for a dress with a defined waist and a fabric that moves naturally. Solid colors, small floral patterns and soft textures all work well.

You do not have to wear a dress, though. A flowy blouse with neutral pants, a jumpsuit or a comfortable skirt can look just as beautiful. The most important thing is choosing an outfit that feels like you.

What Should Dad Wear for Family Photos?

Dad’s outfit should complement the rest of the family without being overly formal. Neutral chinos or khakis paired with a solid or lightly textured shirt are an easy choice.

Depending on the location and season, Dad could wear:

• A linen button-down shirt
• A neutral polo without a large logo
• A textured henley
• A simple sweater
• Khaki, olive, brown or navy pants

Avoid athletic clothing, large logos and overly bright colors unless they are intentionally part of your family’s style.

What Should Children Wear for Family Photos?

Children look best in clothing that allows them to move and play. Soft dresses, rompers, overalls, knit sweaters, simple shirts and neutral pants all photograph beautifully.

Make sure diapers are covered and dresses have bloomers or shorts underneath. Bring a backup outfit for babies and toddlers in case of spills or accidents.

Avoid uncomfortable shoes, itchy fabrics or accessories that your child constantly tries to remove. A comfortable child is much more likely to engage, play and show their natural personality.

What Not to Wear for Family Pictures

While your outfits should reflect your family, I generally recommend avoiding:

• Neon or fluorescent colors
• Large logos and brand names
• Cartoon characters
• Too many competing patterns
• Extremely tight or uncomfortable clothing
• Athletic shoes that clash with the outfits
• Everyone wearing the exact same color
• Clothing that does not match the location or weather

These aren’t strict rules, but avoiding these items usually helps create a softer and more timeless gallery.

Prepare Everything Before Your Session

Lay every outfit together on a bed or neutral surface a few days before your session. Take a picture of the complete collection to see whether anything looks too bright, dark or distracting.

Make sure clothing is clean, steamed and ready to wear. Pack a small session bag containing:

• A lint roller
• Hairbrush or comb
• Baby wipes
• Water
• A backup outfit for young children
• Any necessary touch-up items

Preparing ahead of time will make the day of your session feel much calmer.
